Upcoming Programs for Spring 2009

Spring 2009 will be an exciting year for the Sky View Counseling Program.  I am going to start a series of lessons for each grade level on careers.  From the younger grades learning the basics about careers, to students identifying careers based on different types of skills, to the older grades developing career outlooks--we are going to be working hard to learn about working.

For those who are interested in some great Career Games and Information, please check out the website www.vaview.vt.edu This has a bunch of computer activities as well as lessons for all grade levels!  Thanks to fellow counselor Kathryn Strother for pointing this out to me.

The following small groups are being run until the end of February:

5th Grade Homework Completion Group

4th Grade Boy's Teamwork Group

3rd Grade Friendship Group

2nd Grade Girl's Social Skills Group

Finally, I am very excited that the Sky View Spelling Bee will be on January 16th.  Will report later on the winners!

Who is the Sky View Counselor?

Who am I?

AnthonyblueI'm glad you asked.  My name is Anthony Pearson and I'm the school counselor at Sky View Elementary.  I am proud to be at Sky View; the students and teachers and staff are some of the most passionate people I have ever met.  Our school is great and it is an honor to be here.

Education

I graduated from Presbyterian College in 2002 with a degree in Psychology and Philosophy. During my time at PC, I played varsity soccer, was a member of the Honors Council, and learned a lot about life.

After taking a year off, I went to Auburn University in 2003 and graduated in 2005 with a masters in school counseling. While at Auburn I became a HUGE football fan.  I played on the club soccer team and worked as a Hall Director for the University.

In December 2008, I will graduate from Georgia State University with my education specialist degree (it is also known as an Ed.S.)  Georgia State is about two miles away from where I live, so I like to ride my bicycle to class!

Previous Employment

I've done several different things before I became a school counselor.  I was a case manager for Adults with Special Needs at Annandale Village (www.annandale.org) While at Annandale I worked with psychologists, psychiatrists, and a behavioral therapists.  I learned a lot about the helping profession.

To help pay for college I worked at a company called Evans and Associates.  They distribute supplies to plumbers and electricians throughout the southeast.  I worked in the warehouse.  Since it was a small company, it was my job to load the trucks, unload the trucks, keep everything clean, and do inventory checks.

There were many other jobs before that, too.  I built cash registers for NCR/Solectron, helped referee pee-wee soccer games, bag groceries at Kroger, do the inside detail of cars at a carwash.

I learned the importance of hard work and discipline.  I was constantly traveling because of soccer and constantly studying because of school; work was necessary because I needed to pay for soccer shoes and school supplies!  By maintaining a strong balance of work, study and play, I was able to accomplish a lot.

Free Time

In my free time I like to read, write, run, play soccer (of course), play board games, golf, play video games and try to relax.

Since it is important to have goals, I set them for myself ALL the time.  In January 2009, I will hopefully have a book published called, "Guidance with Good Measure."  It's a book I've written for other school counselors and I'm very proud of it.  It took a lot of work to write it!

Another goal of mine is to publish a series of children's books!  I love to write and I love my job as a counselor.  I think it would be great to read my own children's book to the students at Sky View!

My Family

Most of my family lives in Atlanta and I have an uncle who lives in Texas.  My father is a salesman, my mother is a retired receptionist and my uncle is a coal miner.  My grandfather is a retired construction worker; he helped build office towers in Cleveland, Ohio.

My sister is an English professor at a local community college.  She and I are the first ones in our family to go to college and my parents are very proud of both of us.

My wife and I are proud parents, too!  My daughter's name is Ella and she is the smartest little baby around!  Plus she makes the funniest faces I have ever seen.

So...

that is who I am.  I hope you learned a little bit about me.  If you have any other questions, please email me at Anthony.Pearson@cobbk12.org I'm here to help!

School Counseling at Sky View

Blueturtle

A school counselor's job is to help student's reach their greatest academic, personal/social and career potential.  There are many ways that a school counselor attempts to help their students.

School counselors focus on helping students through classroom guidance, individual counseling sessions, small groups, consultations, and collaborations.

Classroom guidance lessons are meant for everybody.  When a school counselor goes into a classroom he or she teaches the students about different aspects of life.  Some lessons are about the importance of paying attention to the teacher; other lessons inform students about the dangers of gang violence.

Individual counseling is meant for students to work through their concerns in a one-to-one setting.  The counselor will focus on the specific needs of the student.  Individual counseling sessions are from twenty to forty minutes in length and have a varying number of meetings.

Small group counseling is more focused on particular concerns of students.  There may be groups on divorce, loss of a loved one, self-respect and a wide variety of other issues that students must process.  Most small group sessions are from four to six weeks in length.

Consultation and collaboration are slightly different methods of assistance.  When a school counselor offers suggestions for another a teacher or parent to work with their child, that is considered consultation.  The counselor is not directly involved in the helping process-rather he/she is working with the individual who is helping the student.  Collaboration is when a school counselor looks for other resources to help students and families.  This may be done through the Student Support Team or Prevention/Intervention.  When a school counselor works with another agency, collaboration is involved.

Ultimately, the student is helped to develop skills for academics, methods for better personal/social interactions, and understanding of careers.
